Grace has always been fascinated by birth and babies, especially since her youngest sister was born when she was 13 ½ years old. Her own son was born at home in February of 2008, and six years later she began the process of training to be a birth doula.
Doulas (the word, amusingly enough, comes from New Testament Greek) are professionals who provide birthing families with emotional, physical, and informational support before, during and after birth. It is intense, meaningful work from which Grace derives deep joy and satisfaction. She has also trained and served as a postpartum doula, helping families with new babies get through the difficult first weeks. In November 2017, she achieved certification as a birth doula through DONA International, the oldest and well-respected certifying organization.
In 2016, Grace also connected with Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting, an outgrowth of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction method originated by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts. MBCP, pioneered by midwife Nancy Bardacke, helps parents to approach birth with peace and confidence through mindfulness techniques and practice. Grace participated in online training as an MBCP teacher in 2017 and plans to offer her first classes through MindSpace in Montreal in 2019.
